Phase 2 of Marina Beach Blue Flag Project Nears Completion in Chennai
Work on the second phase of the Blue Flag Beach project at Marina Beach in Chennai is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed soon, civic officials have said. The upgraded beachfront stretch is likely to be opened to the public by mid-February, enhancing amenities and visitor experience along the iconic seaside.
The Blue Flag initiative, managed by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), aims to transform Marina Beach into a world-class sustainable and eco-friendly destination by meeting strict international standards for safety, cleanliness, and environmental management.
The first phase of the project, completed near the Marina swimming pool, has already become a popular attraction with thousands of visitors every day. Phase 2, being developed opposite Vivekananda House, features new facilities including seating units, umbrellas, observation towers, children’s play zones, study areas, and selfie points, along with inclusive amenities such as gender-inclusive toilets and accessible facilities for persons with disabilities.
Officials expect the work to be finished by February 17, after which the enhanced Blue Flag beachfront will be opened for public use. In addition, efforts are underway to achieve Blue Flag certification for other beaches in Tamil Nadu.
