The Government had  last month announced the second deadline for autorickshaws to recalibrate meters and follow the new tariff set by the government draws to an end on Friday. The government first set October 15 as the deadline for auto drivers and later extended it by a month on a petition filed by CITU in the Madras HC.

Till Thursday evening, 45,476 of the 71,420 autorickshaw drivers in city had their meters recalibrated and 65,241 drivers had received the new fare cards. It is unlikely that the 25,944 registered drivers will be able to recalibrate the meters on a single day, but the government has not yet announced any extension or new deadline.

The city traffic police and the traffic department officials are gearing up to crack down from Saturday on violators who fail to use the final day to get their act together. Officials on Thursday said regional transport offices would remain open on Friday despite it being Muharram, a public holiday.

The government has so far detained 3,561 autorickshaws since enforcement of the new fares and reset meters began on September 16.
