Chennai: GCC Makes Cattle Licensing and Microchipping Mandatory

Posted on: 31/Jan/2026 10:59:40 AM

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has passed a resolution making it mandatory for cattle owners to obtain licences and microchip their animals to control stray cattle in the city. Owners must submit licence applications by March 18, with a fee of ₹100 per cattle.

Application forms can be downloaded from the GCC website and submitted to zonal veterinary officers. After field inspections, licences will be issued, and microchips will be implanted to digitally store ownership and cattle details. The GCC has procured 25,000 microchips and 25 readers.

The corporation continues to impose a ₹10,000 fine on owners whose cattle are found roaming on roads. Modern cattle sheds are already available in several zones, with more under construction.

Over the past five years, 16,921 cattle were seized, and ₹4.5 crore was collected as fines. In 2024–2025 alone, 4,237 cattle were caught, generating ₹2.22 crore in fines.
