Posted on: 30/Jan/2026 3:51:39 PM

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has successfully completed the Intermediate Overhauling (IOH) Phase 1 of all its 52 metro trains, marking a major milestone in its ongoing efforts to ensure passenger safety, comfort, and reliable service.

CMRL has been operating metro services since 2015 and follows a strict maintenance schedule that includes monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and annual inspections, along with fitness certification. In addition, each train undergoes a major maintenance process known as Intermediate Overhauling (IOH) before its next major overhaul.

During the IOH process, trains are fully dismantled and inspected in detail. Critical components such as wheels, suspension systems, axles, brakes, electrical equipment, and air-conditioning units are examined, repaired or replaced as required. Wheels are reshaped for smooth performance, and axles are tested using advanced techniques to detect any hidden defects. The interiors and exteriors are thoroughly cleaned using eco-friendly materials to ensure hygiene and passenger comfort.

After reassembly, each train undergoes extensive safety and performance testing, including stationary checks and trial runs at various speeds on both test tracks and main lines. Only after meeting all safety standards is the train certified fit for passenger service by the competent authority.

With the completion of the IOH of the 52nd and final train, CMRL has successfully completed the scheduled overhaul cycle for its entire metro fleet, strengthening its commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and world-class metro services to the people of Chennai.

The 52nd train was flagged off for revenue service by Thiru. Manoj Goyal, Director (Systems and Operations), in the presence of Thiru. A.R. Rajendran, Chief General Manager (Rolling Stock), Thiru. Gopinath Mallya, Chief Advisor, Thiru. Ramasubbu, Advisor (O&RS), and other senior officials and staff of the Rolling Stock division.
