Metrowater Moves Towards 24x7 Water Supply in Adyar Zone
Chennai Metrowater is moving closer to providing round-the-clock piped water supply in the Adyar zone and is currently evaluating tenders to appoint a concessionaire for the project.
Under the ₹271.50-crore scheme, water supply in Zone XIII will increase from the current 35 million litres per day (MLD) to 50 MLD, benefiting nearly 38,866 households across wards 170, 173, 174, 178 to 180 and part of 169. The project is expected to be completed within two years.
Water will be sourced from the Nemmeli Desalination Plant and the Chembarambakkam Water Treatment Plant. Distribution stations at Pallipattu and Thiruvanmiyur will be upgraded with automated systems and SCADA-based real-time monitoring.
The project will be implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Model, with technical support from the Water Corporation of Odisha. Officials said residents would receive 150 litres per capita per day as per national norms.
Residents have welcomed the move but stressed the need for clean, affordable and accountable water supply. Work on the project is expected to begin in the coming months.
