CMRL Reworks Phase-II Plan, Red Line to Reach Alandur by June 2026

Posted on: 13/Jan/2026 2:39:30 PM

Following a successful trial run on a key Phase-II stretch, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has revised its rollout plan for Corridor-5 (Red Line), aiming to extend services up to Alandur by June 2026 instead of terminating at Nandambakkam.

The decision comes after progress on the Vadapalani-Poonamallee depot section, a double-decker viaduct expected to begin commercial operations by mid-February. Corridor-5 spans 47 km from Koyambedu to Sholinganallur.

By pushing services to Alandur - a major interchange connecting the Green and Blue lines - CMRL aims for earlier integration with the operational network and improved passenger interchange. However, officials caution that construction challenges along the narrow Butt Road stretch may affect timelines.

Meanwhile, CMRL has awarded a ₹137.08-crore contract to Jakson Limited for electrical, plumbing and fire-protection works at eight underground stations on Phase-II Corridor-4, covering stations between Light House Metro and Kodambakkam Metro.
