Chennai–Rameswaram Vande Bharat Express to Launch Before Pongal
A new Vande Bharat Express service between Chennai and Rameswaram is set to be launched before the Pongal festival, offering faster and more comfortable travel on one of Tamil Nadu’s busiest routes.
The Railway Board had approved the introduction of the Vande Bharat service on the Chennai Egmore–Rameswaram route a few months ago, considering the heavy passenger demand. Following the approval, trial runs were conducted successfully at speeds of up to 130 kmph, and the train is now ready for commercial operations.
Railway officials confirmed that the timetable has been finalised to ensure the service begins ahead of Pongal. As a festive gesture, the new Vande Bharat Express is expected to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Once operational, the Chennai–Rameswaram Vande Bharat Express is expected to significantly reduce travel time, benefiting pilgrims visiting the Rameswaram temple as well as tourists and regular passengers. The semi-high-speed train will also offer modern amenities, enhanced safety features, and a superior travel experience, strengthening rail connectivity within Tamil Nadu.
