Cold Wave to Grip Tamil Nadu for Four Days; Fog, Frost and Rainfall Expected Soon

Posted on: 12/Dec/2025 1:40:16 PM

Tamil Nadu is set to experience a notable dip in temperatures over the next four days, as cold, dry winds from North India intensify across the state. According to private weather forecaster Delta Weatherman Hemachander, a strong high-pressure system over northern India has strengthened the flow of northeasterly winds, resulting in much colder nights and early mornings in many regions.

Cold Spell from December 12 to 15

From Friday to Monday, Tamil Nadu will see:

- Sharp increase in night and early-morning chill

- Dense fog formation in several districts

- Frost-like conditions in higher altitudes

Temperature Outlook

Coastal Districts (Chennai to Kanyakumari)

Minimum temperatures are expected to fall between:

18°C (64.4°F) and 21°C (69.8°F)

Interior Districts (Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Tiruchi, Dindigul etc.)

16°C (60.8°F) to 18°C (64.4°F)

Residents in these regions may feel a “hill-station-like chill” during the night and early morning.

Western Ghats Hill Stations

Cold conditions will be more intense in:

- Ooty & Coonoor (Nilgiris)

- Valparai (Coimbatore)

- Kodaikanal (Dindigul)

Minimum temperatures could drop to:

8°C (46.4°F) to 10°C (50°F)

Some pockets may even witness frost formation.

Rain Expected After the Cold Wave

Following the cold spell:

- Light rain is expected in Chennai and nearby districts on December 16, 17 and 18.

- A low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal, with potential to intensify into a cyclone, depending on atmospheric conditions.

Residents are advised to stay updated with weather alerts and take precautions during foggy and cold mornings.
