Tamil Nadu SETC to Roll Out 20 New Volvo Multi-Axle Luxury Buses Next Week; Festive Season Launch Planned
Tamil Nadu’s State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) is all set to introduce 20 brand-new Volvo multi-axle luxury buses into public service next week. Senior officials confirmed that the buses have been fully constructed, tested, and formally handed over to the corporation on Wednesday.
As part of the government’s initiative to upgrade public transport to match the standards of private omni buses, the Transport Department has procured 130 new advanced-technology buses for the 2025–2026 financial year. Construction of these buses has been taking place in Bengaluru.
Breakdown of the 130 Newly Procured Buses
- 110 non-AC buses equipped with seater and sleeper facilities
- 20 Volvo multi-axle luxury seater buses, designed to provide premium comfort for long-distance travellers
- The 20 Volvo luxury buses, built with world-class features and superior ride quality, have now successfully completed test runs within the manufacturing facility.
SETC Managing Director R. Mohan stated that the first batch of eight buses had already been brought to Chennai earlier, and now all 20 Volvo buses have reached the city and are ready for deployment. The buses will officially begin service next week.
Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister and Transport Minister are expected to flag off the new Volvo buses, marking a major upgrade in SETC’s long-distance travel segment.
Special Festive Season Operations
The new luxury buses are planned to be operated during the upcoming festive travel rush, including:
- Christmas
- New Year (English New Year)
- Pongal festival
Passengers traveling to their hometowns for the festivities will soon be able to enjoy a more comfortable and premium journey on these new Volvo buses.
The rollout of these buses is expected to significantly enhance SETC’s service quality and provide a strong alternative to private luxury bus operators.
