Poondi Reservoir Inflow Drops; 500 Cusecs Released into Kosasthalaiyar River

Posted on: 04/Dec/2025 9:45:17 AM

The inflow into the Poondi Reservoir, one of Chennai’s key drinking water sources, has decreased slightly, dropping from 2,100 cusecs to 1,950 cusecs. According to officials from the Water Resources Department, the reduction in inflow is being closely monitored as part of routine dam management.

Despite the decline, the reservoir continues to receive a steady amount of water from upstream catchment areas. To regulate the water level and ensure safe storage, authorities have initiated a controlled discharge of 500 cusecs per second into the Kosasthalaiyar River. This release helps maintain adequate buffer capacity in the dam, especially during periods of continued rainfall.

Officials also stated that downstream areas are being monitored regularly, and the current discharge level is considered safe. Further adjustments to the outflow will be made depending on rainfall intensity and inflow variations in the coming hours.

Residents in low-lying areas along the Kosasthalaiyar River have been advised to stay updated through local authorities in case of any changes in water release
