Cyclone Ditwah Near Chennai: Heavy Rains Continue, Red Alert Issued for Four Districts

A deep depression located just 50 km from Chennai has remained centered over the Bay of Bengal for several hours. With the northeast monsoon intensifying, widespread rainfall continues across Tamil Nadu.

The depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Sri Lankan coast has strengthened into a severe cyclonic storm. Chennai has recorded an average of 13.4 cm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

Cyclone Ditwah has now weakened into a deep depression and is moving closer to the Chennai coast. Since early morning, heavy rains have been lashing Chennai and its suburbs.

Reports indicate that the deep depression will remain close to the Chennai coast for the next two days. As a precaution, a red alert has been issued for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram districts.

The highest rainfall recorded in the past 24 hours includes:

  • Parrys  – 26.5 cm

  • Ennore – 26.4 cm

  • Ice House – 23.1 cm

  • Basin Bridge – 20.7 cm
