MRTS Trains to Run Every 5 Minutes After CMRL Takeover
The Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) is set for a major upgrade as the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) prepares to take over operations. Commuters can soon expect trains every five minutes, significantly reducing waiting time and improving connectivity.
Air-Conditioned Trains Planned
As part of the modernization:
- MRTS may introduce air-conditioned three-coach trains.
- Services will initially run with a 10-minute frequency, gradually moving to a 5-minute interval as operations stabilize.
Procurement of New Coaches
The Tamil Nadu government plans to procure 90 new coaches:
- 25 trains will be deployed for daily service.
- 5 trains will be kept as reserve to ensure uninterrupted operations.
MoU Expected by December
Officials have indicated that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between CMRL and the Railways is likely to be signed by December. However, decisions regarding the signalling system and traction technology for the upgraded network are yet to be finalized.
The overhaul is expected to enhance speed, comfort, and overall commuter experience across the MRTS corridor.
