Tamil Nadu Heads for One of the Driest Novembers in Recent Years

Posted on: 21/Nov/2025 11:27:40 AM

Tamil Nadu is experiencing one of its worst-performing Novembers in terms of rainfall, according to early data and weather observations. Weather experts note that when November records significantly below-average rainfall, the overall Northeast Monsoon for Tamil Nadu typically ends below normal levels - and this year appears to be following the same pattern.

Adding to the concern, the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO), a key driver for enhanced rainfall, is not expected to return in December, reducing the chances of any major rainfall revival for the state.

November Rainfall Trend in Tamil Nadu (Recent Years)

Normal November Rainfall: 181.7 mm

2018: 159.1 mm
2019: 125.8 mm
2020: 203.3 mm
2021: 425.3 mm
2022: 178.5 mm
2023: 233 mm
2024: 140.2 mm
2025: 50.9 mm *(till 20.11.2025)

With just 50.9 mm recorded so far this year, 2025 stands among the poorest November rainfall performances in recent times.

This analysis was shared by Tamil Nadu Weatherman, who consistently tracks monsoon behavior and rainfall distribution across the state.

As the Northeast Monsoon progresses, the lack of strong weather systems and unfavorable atmospheric conditions raises concerns about water availability and agricultural impact in the coming months.
