Double Decker Buses Set to Return in Chennai Within Two Months
Chennai is all set to witness the return of double decker buses, nearly 20 years after the service was discontinued. According to MTC officials, 20 new electric double decker buses have been added to the upcoming fleet and will begin service within the next two months.
Earlier, double decker buses were widely used on the Tambaram–Broadway (18A) route and were popular for their high seating capacity and the unique city-view experience they offered. However, the service was stopped in 2008 due to increasing flyovers and traffic congestion.
Currently, trailer buses are being operated on a trial basis by a private company. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation is actively working on launching the new electric double decker buses, marking a major upgrade in Chennai’s public transport system.
