Chennai residents have now got a superb reason to rejoice!!
The news that has come out is that the Kuthambakkam mofussil bus terminus would be inaugurated on the 14th December or 17th January 2026. For the operation of this new bus terminus and for its maintenance, CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has now invited bids. The Kuthambakkam bus terminal would be managed under a private-public partnership model for 15 years.
For operating and maintaining the entire bus terminal complex and its infrastructure including the parking areas, dormitories, MTC depots and all amenities etc, the concessionaire would play a huge role. Once in 3 years, maintenance work would be undertaken also.
The Chennai city`s fourth major bus hub at Kuthambakkam is being developed on 24.8 acre land near Thiruvallur at a cost of Rs 414 cr and soon it would compete with other 3 bus hubs like Koyambedu, Madhavaram, Kilambakkm etc. Those heading towards western parts of TN would benefit by the new bus terminal at Kuthambakkam. It is brought out that this project includes 9 acres of idle bus parking plus police station, 18.2 acre access road etc. It would be connected with NH-4.
Activities like security, parking, ad management and dorm operations etc would be outsourced or sublicensed by the concessionaire. According to Mr. P.K. Sekarbabu, the Kuthambakkam bus terminus would be a part of CMDA`s broader strategy to construct multi-modal transport hubs across the metropolitan region. He added that the aim would be to decongest and ensure better commuter convenience. With road markings and signages etc, CUMTA or Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority has started making improvements to SIDCO and Pudhurmedu Junction.
It was later explained by member secretary of CUMTA, Mr. I. Jeyakumar that another road has been created linking the bus terminus with Tiruvallur High Road.
