IRCTC Website Crash Creates Chaos Ahead of Diwali Travel Rush

Posted on: 17/Oct/2025 11:59:28 AM

The IRCTC website went down on Thursday as passengers rushed to book train tickets for Diwali, leaving many travelers disappointed. With Diwali falling on Monday, October 20, people across cities are returning to their hometowns over the weekend, causing heavy traffic congestion in urban areas.

Special trains and buses are being operated to ease the travel rush. However, tickets for these special trains are selling out within minutes of booking opening, adding to passengers’ difficulties. Railway stations including Chennai Egmore, Chennai Central, and Tambaram have seen overwhelming crowds, making it difficult for travelers to even stand on platforms.

Passengers are now rushing to book Tatkal tickets. Bookings for AC seats opened at 10 am and non-AC sleeper seats at 11 am today, October 17, for travel on October 17 and 18. Despite the early start, the IRCTC website crashed within minutes, frustrating passengers waiting for sleeper bookings.

Adding to the frustration, the IRCTC website announced that tickets booked for the next hour cannot be cancelled, further inconveniencing travelers during the Diwali travel rush.
