Whats happening in ECR in Chennai that is creating issues for the residents?

Posted on: 08/Oct/2025 9:36:11 AM

The residents in ECR or East Coast Road in south Chennai are not happy now.

It must be noted that sections of road between Palavakkam and Neelankarai on the ECR are uneven or broken on the edges. Gravel and dust have accumulated on the road sides. It was mentioned by some officials that the road widening by the highways dept has been the reason for this.

The uneven roads are present right from Thiruvanmiyur itself and this was mentioned by a resident from Panayur. She added that at some places the road dips suddenly and gives way to gravel. Truth is that in other places the road rises suddenly and makes commuting tough.

After milling work, the roads are not laid near the Neelankarai arch and this has been making the motorists skid while overtaking other vehicles.

From Thiruvanmiyur to Vettuvankanni, most of the road widening works have been completed and this was as per some officials belonging to the highways dept. Point is that several sections from Palavakkam to Neelankarai have been laid and widened.

According to Mr. Raja assistant engineer, Highways dept, the only unattended stretch was along Neelankarai now and work on the rest have been completed. He spoke about how MWD had handed over the road just last week. He added that the objective was to lay a road of 8m width before the onset of monsoon for the public to commute easily due to adequate space. It is learnt that the edges would be levelled and roads would be laid further. He concluded that the work would be completed before the end of the month.

Mr. V. Mathiyazhagan, who is the chairman of zone 15 ward committee had assured that the road widening work would be completed before monsoon.
