The Tamilnadu Government is all set to acquire 400 kilograms of gold worth several Crores from the open market for its marriage assistance scheme, one of the key electoral promises of the ruling party during 2011 Assembly elections.

About one lakh women will be getting four grams of gold to make Thirumangalyam (mangalsutra), the auspicious piece of jewel worn by the bride, in fiscal 2013-14.The AIADMK made the promise during the elections to ensure that poor women in the state will have the vital piece of wedding jewel which they otherwise may not afford.

The Government has floated a tender to buy 1,00,000 gold coins of 22 carat each weighing four grams through competitive bidding by manufacturers and dealers of the yellow metal.

To ensure purity, correct weight and timely delivery, the government will buy the gold coins from public sector banks and jewelers.

According to the government, the successful bidder has to supply the coins at the designated locations in 32 district treasuries/pay and accounts offices. The government will get the quality/purity of the coins certified through an assayer approved by the Bureau of Indian Standards.
