Superb!! Sale of bottled drinking water to be introduced in the TN govt buses again!!
The tenders have been floated to identify the suppliers of bottled drinking water in the TN transport corporation buses. It is now said that the TN government would introduce the sale of bottled drinking water in the TN transport corporation buses.
It was later explained by some officials from the Transport Department that the scheme would be first introduced in SETC or State Express Transport Corporation buses and later would be expanded to other state run transport corporations depending on the demand.
As per an official it was clear that SETC now operates more than 1080 deluxe and a/c buses carrying more than one lakh passengers every day. The absence of safe drinking water during long distance travel has been an issue for the passengers and there were also many complaints regarding this.
In the initial phase, sealed one litre bottles of drinking water would be provided by the transport department to the passengers at a cost of Rs 10 per bottle. Now, the tender process to select the suppliers has been going on and ahead of the Pongal season in 2026 this project is expected to be launched for the sake of the commuters.
It is learnt that the name of the bottled drinking water scheme would be announced later and this was according to some officials. From 2013 onwards, Amma mineral water was sold for Rs 10 at the bus stops but it was stopped in 2021 due to the malfunctioning of the Gummidipoondi water plant.
