One of the oldest railway stations across Tamil Nadu is Central railway station. From this station every day, more than 500 electric trains and more than 100 express trains operate. This station has a footfall of about 3lakhs every day. Truth is that near the Central railway station are present metro railway station Park railway station plus others like Ripon Buildings, General Hospital etc. Therefore, the Central railway station is always full of people.
Point is that out of a total of 16 platforms in Central railway station, 11 platforms are being used by express trains and platforms 12 to 16 are used by light trains. In the old building, there are 6 routes for those travelling in the express trains. There are no facilities to collect tickets in that area. The ticket vending machine present does not function properly. It must be noted that there is a ticketing section on the first line on the left side of the railway station on Walltax Road. Passengers are finding it tough as the freight trucks and autos are parked there. The passengers have made a demand to relocate the ticketing section to a place where blankets used by the train passengers are being stored.
Point to be noted is that autos and two wheelers have been causing high congestion at the Central railway station in Chennai now. There is a demand to improve facilities for the passengers at this railway station.
In the area where the electric trains operate, there are ticketing sections and automatic ticket vending machines. People travelling on the express trains face issues in getting their tickets here. As there are just 2 ticketing points, passengers have complained about an increase in mobile phone and money theft.
The passengers are also unhappy regarding the electronic display boards that would announce the arrival and departure of the trains. The passengers have mentioned that most of the time advertisements were only shown on the electronic board. Passengers were also unhappy regarding the auto drivers who forced them into their autos outside the railway station.
It must be noted that the public coming to the Central railway station usually arrive through the electric train section. The traffic congestion in that area is high due to the parking of autos and 2 wheelers in an irregular manner.
It was revealed by Chennai Railway Divisions Commercial Division officials that ticketing and platform ticketing units have been set up at appropriate places for the passenger’s convenience. To issue train tickets people have been selected and stationed at the entrances also.
Inspector at the Chennai Central railway station Mr. Madhusudhana Reddy spoke about how since last January as many as 20250 cases have been booked against those autos that violated rules. He concluded that for easy movement of the passengers various steps were taken.
