Great news regarding traffic congestion easing in Chennai!!

The Highway officials have confirmed that the construction of the double-decker elevated corridor between Chennai Port and Maduravoyal would be completed in the first half of 2027. It is now said that this construction would ease traffic congestion in Chennai.

This construction work was supposed to get completed in May 2026 itself but delayed now due to the monsoon etc. The deadline for completion of the work is now revised by the officials to 2027. To monitor progress etc, monthly review meetings are being held also.

It must be taken into account that the 19km elevated road begins at gate 10 of Chennai Port and runs along the Cooum River up to Koyambedu and joins NH-4 extending till Maduravoyal.

Along the Cooum, long pillars are being erected and there are plans to raise them to a specified height before the onset of monsoons. Mumbai based company has been implementing the construction work at a cost of Rs 5570 cr. The work is being executed by NHAI or National Highways Authority of India in 4 phases.

For phase-1(for a distance of 4.95km) Rs 1388.59 cr has been allotted. Likewise for phase-2 (for a distance of 5.10km) Rs 1616.97 cr has been allotted. For phase-3 (for a distance of 4.49km) Rs 1299.36 cr has been allotted and for phase-4 (for a distance of 6.41km) Rs 1205.40 has been allotted. Through land acquisition and other approvals, Tamil Nadu is extending its support. Truth is that both the central as well as state government is involved in this. With this elevated corridor construction, the traffic congestion in Chennai would be reduced significantly and movement of cargo to and from the port would get better.
