Ask Chennaiites about one of the most iconic public spaces in the city, then the answer from the majority would be Island Grounds!!

It is worthy to mention that for many years Island Grounds in north Chennai has been the space for Industrial Fair or exhibition and many have visited here with their families and friends for relaxation etc.

The news now is that the exhibition centre at Island Grounds would be inaugurated by December month in 2025. It is now said that the facility would host permanent trade exhibitions around the year. Not only that, the Island grounds could become a place for cultural events also. Amazing isn`t it!!

It is worthy to mention here that Island Grounds spread over a huge area of over 135 acres and created in the 19th century has been hosting fairs and public gatherings. Since 1975, this public space in Chennai has been a hub for Indian Tourist and Industrial Fair.

It was brought out by CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority that the new centre would be constructed on 3.10 acres. It must be recalled that previously 18 acres of space was supposed to be used but was scaled down due to 3.10 acres.

According to a senior official from CMDA, the project comprises stilt and 2 storey structures with a total built up area of 15373 sq m. It would be 24m in height and would have 24 flexible exhibition stalls of 400sqft each. In addition, there would be an amphitheatre, public plaza, landscaped greens, parking facilities and a waterfront promenade with public conveniences.

Throughout the year, the newly designed structure could be used and exhibitions etc would not get affected by seasonal weather. The design has been prepared by taking into account environmental and safety regulations etc. Certain activities would be restricted as the site falls under CRZ-2 classification. Restrictions have been placed on the height of the structure by the Aviation and Defence authorities.

As this project is within 180m of Fort St George, the National Monument Authority has reviewed the project. Truth is that this facility would change the face of north Chennai. There would be a restaurant (those visiting Marina Beach can also use) and a children`s play area etc here. This was mentioned by the Housing and Urban Development minister Mr. P.K. Sekar Babu.
