Chennai Metro Phase 2: TBM “Kurinji” Breaks Through at Kolathur Station
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) achieved a major milestone in its Phase 2 project with the first breakthrough of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) “Kurinji” at Kolathur Station North Shaft on August 21, 2025.
The TBM began its drive on February 20, 2025, from Kolathur Ramp and completed a 246-metre tunnel despite challenges such as low overburden, steep gradients, and heavy traffic along the Inner Ring Road.
This marks the first breakthrough in Corridor 5’s underground section, which spans 5.8 km with 5 stations and 2 ramps. The tunnelling work is being executed by Tata Projects Ltd. with funding support from JICA.
CMRL officials said the achievement reflects their commitment to delivering safe, sustainable, and efficient urban transport for Chennai.
