Huge demand for core engineering subjects now in Tamil Nadu!!
Who said core engineering subjects are losing their popularity amongst the students?
Point is that the huge demand for core engineering branches among the students has grabbed the attention of many now.
It is important to note that for the first time in many years all core engineering branches now filled more than half of their intake in engineering counselling.
There are few reasons cited by the experts for the demand for the core engineering branches now. These are preference for top colleges, revival of demand for core engineers and layoffs by IT companies etc. The top picks now among the students are computer science engineering, artificial intelligence and data science, IT etc.
Three rounds of online engineering counselling have been completed now and the important piece of information is that 130077 seats out of a total of 172589 seats in 425 engineering colleges were filled this year. Point to be noted is that more than 75% of seats have been filled up now and this is the highest in the last 5 years. It must be recalled that last year 66% of the total seats were filled up after 3 rounds of engineering counselling.
According to career consultant Mr. Jayaprakash Gandhi it was clear that the students preferred colleges over courses. Information gathered is that while in the last year more than 80% seats were filled in 149 colleges but now more than 80% seats were filled in 205 engineering colleges. He concluded that the students this year preferred branches like civil engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical & electronics engineering or EEE.
It was later explained by some experts that importance for semiconductor industry plus boom in the infrastructure projects have led to the revival of demand for core engineering branches now.
Mr. T. Kalaiselvan, former additional director, CUIC, Anna University, Chennai mentioned that because of the infrastructural projects like roads and housing etc there would be more demand for the civil engineers. Fact is that the cut offs for the core engineering branches have also increased now because of more demand from the students.
