Sensational information about Metro Water Dept increasing daily water supply in Chennai now!!

Posted on: 13/Aug/2025 9:15:21 AM

The residents belonging to localities in Chennai like Alandur, Perungudi, Valasaravakkam, etc are happy now. Their dependency on water lorries for drinking water supply has decreased now.

Piped water connections have been completed in many localities and even in the newly added areas in Chennai now. The Chennai Metro Water Department or CMWD has increased the daily drinking water supply from 1100 MLD to 1240 MLD.

It must be noted that atleast 1.5lakh additional households have been receiving drinking water supply now. Previously, the residents in places like Alandur, Perungudi, Manali, Valasaravakkam, Madhavaram, Sholinganallur etc depended mostly on wells, groundwater, water lorries etc for the draining water but now these residents have been receiving piped water for the last 2 weeks.

It was later brought out by an engineer from the CMWD that the daily water supply is 39 MLD each in zones 14 and 15 and due to this reason more than 60000 residents in these zones now receive enough water. The desalination plants at Nemili supply drinking water to them now.

According to Mr. S. Saminathan, Confederation of Sholinganallur constituency, RWA secretary it was clear that the daily dependency on water lorries have reduced now due to piped water supply. He expressed his concern about damage to the water pipes due to other infrastructural works.

It is superb to note that about 30000 residents belonging to 2 newly added areas in the north Chennai receive piped water supply now every day.

Mr. D. Neelakanna, Federation of Madhavaram RWA president spoke about how 50% of the constituency received piped water supply. It was later mentioned by some officials belonging to CMWD that the piped connections would be provided in a phased manner.

It is noteworthy that Chennai and its newly added areas have a demand of about 1.5TMC and from the Veeranam Tank about 180 MLD of water is sourced. Water is also sourced from 2 desalination plants at Nemili that contribute 81 MLD and 60MLD respectively. North Chennai based Minjur desalination plant remains non-operational. Point is that water present in the Chikkarayapuram and Erumaiyur quarries is held as a reserve stock.
