On Tuesday, 29th July, a council meeting took place in Chennai. In the meeting, the Chennai Corporation Commissioner Mr. J. Kumaragurubaran announced the installation of a smart water system in all schools run by GCC within 2 months. Point is that this initiative is a part of a recently introduced scheme that was flagged off by the chief minister Mr. M.K. Stalin
Earlier the councillor of ward 138 Mr. Kannan raised concerns about the absence of clean drinking water in the corporation schools in Chennai. The announcement regarding installation of smart water systems came after this effort taken by the councillor. Mr. Kannan mentioned that the students at the corporation schools were suffering due to absence of clean drinking water facilities. He hinted about the RO systems that used to be available in the schools.
It was explained by the Chennai Corporation Commissioner Mr. J. Kumaragurubaran that the present RO system was expensive to maintain once defunct. He added that the new smart water systems would not only provide a solution to the clean drinking water availability but also would help to keep an eye on the water intake of the students.
This move of setting up of smart water systems in the corporation schools in Chennai is in line with the school education department`s recent push for hydration among students. It must be recalled that the state government earlier this month introduced a water bell initiative across all the schools. As per the scheme, the students are encouraged to hydrate themselves without leaving their classrooms during the designated water break.
