Northeast monsoon from Tuesday

Posted on: 19/Oct/2013 10:46:02 AM
India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chennai has mentioned that the northeast monsoon will be here on 22nd Oct 2013 (Tuesday), and the first five days may bring heavy showers to the city and surrounding areas. The northeast monsoon, which begins as the southwest monsoon retreats, contributes to 60% of the annual rainfall in the state. Chennai receives 85cm of rain, almost double the state average of 43cm. The coastal belt from Nellore to Cuddalore and Vedaranyam will receive the major chunk of rain, with Vedaranyam receiving 105cm of rain.

Heavy spells in the mornings, especially in coastal areas, will mark the onset of the northeast monsoon unlike the southwest monsoon from June to September when it rains in the evenings and nights. Passing showers will continue through the day.

The Corporation of Chennai last week said it had desilted drains and canals, and it has activated its monsoon emergency help lines to deal with cases of flooding and uprooting of trees.
