Renovation of Tholkappiyar Poonga in Chennai - Whats happening now?
One of the new landmarks in Chennai!!
We are talking about the Tholkappiyar Poonga or Park in Adyar. In Chennai, Tholkappiyar poonga is getting renovated and the work is in final stages now.
It must be recalled that the foundation stone to construct this Tholkappiyar Park was laid in the year 2007 by the then CM of TN Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi. The park was opened for the public in the year 2011. It was constructed on 50 acres of land in Adyar.
In June 2023, the TN government had decided to renovate this superb park at the cost of Rs 20 cr.
Various renovation works that were carried out in this park were the park façade, visitor`s area, children`s area, viewing area, exhibition area etc. Point is that in May 2023 administrative sanction was also issued to construct a suspension bridge here at a cost of Rs 9.35 cr.
Since June 2023, renovation works have been going on at this park to expand the park and to bring more recreational features to this park. More than 100 types of plants and trees have been planted here to improve the greenery.
Highlight of the Tholkappiyar Poonga:
It is worthy to note that the highlight of this park is the construction of a suspension bridge with modern facilities at Rs 9.30 cr. Work is now in the last stage. Point is that the skywalk has been completed across greenery leading to Adyar estuary and connecting building 1 and 2 of this park. This suspension bridge is 160m in length and it can withstand about 600 people standing. After inspection, the suspension bridge would be opened for the public.
It is now mentioned that once this park is opened for public after renovation then Tholkappiyar Poonga would become one of the new landmarks in Chennai.
