In a major milestone for Chennai Metro Rail Phase 2, Tunnel Boring Machine “Peacock” (DL 1074) successfully completed its 2.047 km drive and achieved breakthrough at Kodambakkam Ramp Retrieval Shaft near Meenakshi College, Arcot Road.
The tunnel drive began on May 2, 2024, from Panagal Park Crossover and passed through 190 buildings, two churches, and beneath the Kodambakkam Flyover, with zero public disruption.
This marks the longest tunnel completion in Corridor 4 (Lighthouse – Poonamallee Bypass). The 10.03 km underground stretch is being executed by ITD Cementation India Ltd with four TBMs under CMRL’s Phase 2, funded by ADB, AIIB, and NDB.
CMRL officials and representatives from ITD Cementation and project consultants were present during the breakthrough event, underscoring the city’s progress toward enhanced metro connectivity.
