The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has begun work to transform Marina Beach (near the swimming pool), Thiruvanmiyur, Palavakkam, and Uthandi into Blue Flag-certified beaches.
A civic official confirmed that the Marina Beach project is nearly complete and new facilities will be inaugurated by the end of the month. Encouraged by the public`s positive response, GCC plans to extend similar upgrades to other beaches.
Each project will cover 10–20 acres, selected by TN-SHORE and the Department of Environment and Climate Change under Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms.
At Marina, eco-friendly infrastructure has already been developed over 30 acres, including:
- 40 bamboo recliners with 20 umbrellas
- 4 watchtowers
- 4 children’s play areas
- 2 selfie points
- 20 CCTV cameras
- Open gym
- 24 bamboo dustbin pairs
- A bamboo arch (40 ft wide x 30 ft high)
- A meditation and reading space
- 30 beach wheelchairs and toilets
Residents have appreciated the new amenities, while some local fishermen expressed concern over displacement and water stagnation issues.
GCC has floated a tender to carry out similar development across the four beaches at a total estimated cost of ₹24.80 crore.
