Construction of a new railway station plus 2 more railway tracks from Perambur to Ambattur- Whats going to happen?

Great news for the Perumbur & Chennai residents!!

For the purpose of reducing congestion and to provide comfortable travel for the public, 2 more railway tracks are being constructed from Perumbur to Ambattur for a distance of 6.4kms. The estimated cost for this would be Rs 182.10 crores. For this, a state-of-art railway station would be constructed in the Perambur area.

In the future after the completion of this new railway station about 75% of trains (operating from the Perambur area) would operate from this new station. By this, traffic congestion in the Perambur area would come down. Moreover, some trains that depart from the ever busy Chennai Central station would depart from Perumbur. By this, congestion would be reduced at Chennai Central railway station.

Point is that to facilitate smooth and fast movement of trains from this new railway station in Perumbut additional railway tracks are very much needed between Perumbur and Ambattur. Therefore, 5th and 6th tracks are being constructed. The railway tracks present now are in poor condition. As per the government it was clear that the tracks that are being used up to 105percent now would be used up to 114percent by 2028-2029.

It is now believed that once new railway tracks are laid then not only the passenger traffic but also the commercial traffic would become better. It must be taken into account that an additional 70lakhs tonnes of goods can be exported annually. This would be of huge help to the commercial development of Chennai.

The plan to construct railway tracks has been analysed by some top economists of the government. They have mentioned that this project would be profitable. Information is that the financial rate return would be 17. 45 percent and economical rate return would be 34.43 percent.

Taking all these into account, the Southern Railways has requested the Railways administration to allocate an amount of Rs 182cr for the project of laying additional railway tracks from Perumbur to Ambattur in Chennai. This project would bring many benefits for the Chennai residents. Firstly, it would decongest the traffic and help the passengers to travel comfortably, secondly the train services would improve and thirdly the goods movement would improve and this would help in the business development. It is said that this project might even provide a permanent solution for the traffic congestion issue in Chennai.
