Chennai Cybercrime Wing Recovers ₹2.96 Crore in June; Total Restitution Crosses ₹15.3 Crore in 2024

The Greater Chennai Police’s cybercrime wing has successfully restituted ₹2.96 crore to victims of online fraud during June 2024, showcasing its continued efforts in tackling cybercrime in the city.

In a cumulative achievement for the year, a total of ₹15.30 crore has been returned to affected individuals over the first six months. In addition to returning defrauded funds, police have also taken proactive legal action freezing over ₹40 crore in bank accounts belonging to cybercriminals through court intervention.

Zone-wise Restitution in June:

City Police HQ Cybercrime Unit: ₹2.3 crore from 15 cases
South Zone: ₹29 lakh from 62 cases
North Zone: ₹18.27 lakh from 16 cases
West Zone: ₹11.14 lakh from 31 cases
East Zone: ₹7.7 lakh from 22 cases

Commissioner of Police, Mr. A Arun, urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid transferring money to unknown accounts. He also emphasized the importance of swift action when victimized.

“If anyone falls prey to online financial fraud, they must immediately contact the Cybercrime Helpline at 1930 or lodge a complaint at the official cybercrime portal — www.cybercrime.gov.in he advised.

This sustained effort underscores the city`s determination to combat cyber fraud and secure public trust in the digital age.
