The Tamilnadu  State government had announced the revised fares on August 25 following a Supreme Court directive. It had distributed revised rate cards through RTOs till September 15, and had set an October 15 deadline for the recalibration.

It was earlier announced by Tamilnadu Government that grace period of two days would be given to auto-rickshaw drivers in Chennai to recalibrate their meters to the new fares.

Yesterday Tamilnadu Chief Minister has ordered a one month extension in the deadline to ensure complete compliance. Unions and associations of auto-rickshaw drivers have welcomed and praised the announcement and reaffirmed their commitment to falling under the new price regime. A statement from the government said the Chief Minister had taken cognizance of the fact that only 26,431 of the 71,470 autorickshaws had recalibrated their meters by the October 15 deadline.

Further, only 61,663 revised rate cards had been collected from the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs). In view of these numbers, the statement said, the Chief Minister ordered a one month extension in the deadline.
