In response to allegations of animal mistreatment and deaths at city-run Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has proposed the installation of 60 CCTV cameras across five centres. Each facility will receive 12 internet-enabled 3MP cameras with a 4G SIM, along with video management software to allow for centralised monitoring.
The Rs 17.82 lakh project includes supply, installation, and maintenance, with a three-year warranty and support. The CCTV system will feature network video recorders (NVRs) with footage stored for at least 30 days. Access to data will be restricted to authorised GCC departments.
This move follows concerns raised by the Tamil Nadu Animal Welfare Board regarding the operations of ABC centres, especially surgeries. Officials believe the new surveillance system will enhance transparency, deter malpractice, and provide vital evidence for swift action when needed.
