The Chennai Corporation is set to widen Kamaraj Salai, along Marina Beach, into an eight-lane road to ease traffic congestion in the city. The stretch, currently a 23-meter-wide, four-lane road, will be expanded to 29 meters over a distance of 2.8 km.
Key Highlights
- The project aims to address traffic issues caused by increasing vehicle numbers, new industries, and urban migration.
- Statues of 9 leaders along Kamaraj Salai may be relocated as part of the plan.
- Dedicated footpaths and underpasses will be constructed to manage weekend traffic on Marina Road.
- Dr. Radhakrishnan Road and the MRTS link street at the Kamaraj Salai–VP Raman Road junction will also be widened.
- On Sardar Patel Road, a slip road will be built from IIT Chennai to Gandhi Mandapam bus stand, with plans to widen the road from 26 meters to 40 meters.
