Egmore Railway Station Undergoing Major Upgrade – Platform Closures Announced
Egmore Railway Station, one of Tamil Nadu`s major railway hubs, is currently undergoing a significant upgrade to world-class standards. The Southern Railway initiated the renovation project in February 2023 with an estimated cost of ₹734.91 crore. The initial phase of the project, involving foundation works, has already been completed.
As part of the modernization efforts, a multi-storey car park and a shopping complex are being constructed adjacent to the station on the Gandhi Irwin Road side. Additionally, work has commenced on building a new footbridge connecting Platforms 1 to 11.
To facilitate the construction, Platforms 1 and 2 have been closed from yesterday, and Platforms 3 and 4 are scheduled to be closed in the next 15 days.
Railway officials from the Chennai Division stated, “A large footbridge is being constructed to link all platforms. The foundation work is currently underway.”
Due to the closure of Platforms 1 and 2, the Puducherry MEMU Passenger Train has been diverted and will no longer arrive at Egmore Station. The closure of other platforms will be done in phases, which may lead to changes in the services of approximately 10 express trains. An official announcement regarding these changes will be made soon.
