Chennai Airport Sets Up India’s First Stray Dog Welfare Centre to Ensure Passenger Safety

Posted on: 04/Jun/2025 3:23:27 PM

Chennai International Airport has taken a significant step by becoming the first airport in India to establish a dedicated stray dog safety and welfare centre. This initiative comes in response to the increasing presence of stray dogs around the airport`s domestic and international terminals, which has led to numerous complaints from passengers, airline staff, and security personnel. The airport authorities have partnered with an animal welfare NGO to manage the situation through a structured and humane approach.

As part of the new initiative, trained teams from the NGO will be stationed at the airport in rotational shifts, providing 24/7 surveillance. Their responsibilities include humane capture of stray dogs, sterilisation surgeries, anti-rabies vaccinations, and overall care. The teams will also monitor the airport premises to prevent any mistreatment of the animals, ensuring both passenger safety and animal welfare. This move follows an earlier effort where 40 stray dogs were captured and treated under an animal birth control programme.

The presence of stray dogs had gained significant attention on social media, with several passengers sharing their concerns and experiences online. These posts, along with media coverage, prompted the airport to take further action. With this new initiative, Chennai Airport aims to set an example for other airports in the country by implementing a compassionate yet effective system to address the stray dog issue without compromising on public safety.
