Tomorrow is the deadline for auto meters

Posted on: 15/Oct/2013 2:24:24 PM
The State government on Sunday unveiled a new tariff structure which translated into around 75 per cent hike in minimum fare. The fare for the first 1.8 kilometers is Rs. 25 and Rs. 12 for every additional kilometer.

Drivers of the vehicles have to reset their meters by October 15th. In between, severe action was taken against the drivers who overcharged the people. On public complaint, so far 2000 autos have been impounded. Drivers were levied fines. After October 15, auto rickshaw drivers can present their vehicles for fitness tests only with recalibrated meters.

Road transport officials say, “Of the 5,050 autos in the South zone 4,300 have got new calibrated meters. About 95 per cent of the work is done. We cannot say on the extension of the dates, but there is a possibility seeing the 5 percent who are yet to get one.”

Diligent checking at various points in the city by RTO officials and traffic police has speeded up the implementation process.
