Tribal art exhibition hosted by Chennai

A weeklong painting exhibition showcasing ancient tribal art was organized in South Chennai. Around 40 tribal artists from different parts of India participated in this exhibition.

On Sunday, art lovers and painting enthusiasts thronged an art gallery where artists displayed some of their intricate and primitive artwork done on clothe pieces as well as on other backgrounds. Tribal paintings invariably depict positive themes and imagination, as subjects range from religious to secular, from gods and goddesses to animals and birds, life cycles of birth, death, marriage, farming, harvest, celebration, and the five basic elements of earth.

Organizers said the exhibition’s uniqueness was projected through “Aadi Chitra” (tribal paintings). They said their aim was not only to bring tribal paintings to the mainstream, but also to help tribal artists earn a livelihood, and to restore, preserve and reinforce tribal art.
