Enjoy congestion free shopping in T Nagar in 8 days

People who have been shopping in Pondy Bazaar are put into great distress because of the hawkers on the road. Now there is good news. The high court had earlier ordered the hawkers to move into the complex built by the city corporation by October 10. On October 9, the Federation of Chennai Metropolitan Small Traders Associations, which represents the hawkers in T Nagar, approached the court for an extension of the deadline. This was after hawkers received a notice from the Corporation on October 8 informing them of the October 10 deadline. The hawkers had approached the Madras high court requesting for an extension of the deadline till Diwali to move into the complex, since the festive season is their peak business period. The Madras high court has extended the deadline for them to move into the hawkers` complex to October 20.

The corporation says it will enforce the order on October 20. "This is the third extension of the deadline," said a senior official. "If they do not move in by October 20, it will be contempt of court. So we will move them to enforce the order."

If the hawkers are evicted from Pondy Bazaar by October 20, as promised, Diwali shoppers are likely to enjoy a congestion-free shopping experience in the area after decades.
