Whats happening now regarding the redevelopment of Broadway bus terminus in Chennai?

Posted on: 06/May/2025 9:45:38 AM

Under the redevelopment plans, a 9 storey parking facility and 8 storey terminal with space for commercial activities were supposed to have been established by now at Broadway in north Chennai.

Bitter truth is that the redevelopment work that has been planned for the bus terminus at Broadway in Chennai at a huge cost of Rs 882crores is still pending and not yet started. This despite huge crowds of travellers here every day.

It must be noted that under the Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam the project was aimed to upgrade the old facility into a modern multimodal transport complex. The absence of redevelopment works here has forced the passengers to crowd the terminus.

There were some plans to temporarily shift the operations to a place near the Royapuram railway station but it was not accepted by the residents. The residents were of the opinion that shifting the entire bus fleet to a place near the Royapuram railway station would be very difficult because Beach Road and Prakasam Road are already brimming with traffic.

Only if the civic body gives instructions to MTC to vacate the premises, the bus terminus would get renovated. This terminus comes under the jurisdiction of Chennai Corporation is known.

There has been some suggestion from the locals about shifting the bus terminus to Island Grounds and renting a nearby plot owned by Pachaiyappa Educational Trust as a temporary answer to ease traffic congestion. The CMRL, CMDA and TNUFIDC were responsible for the funds required for the revamping of Broadway bus terminus.
