To reduce the traffic congestion in Chennai, construction of a new bus terminus was started in 2019 in Kilambakkam in southern Chennai. The new bus terminus has been constructed on about 88acres of land at a cost of Rs 287.15 cr. This new bus terminus could accommodate up to 2000 buses, 270 cars, 3500 2 wheelers etc. Important piece of information is that all buses to southern states would be operated from Kilambakkam bus terminus. The work here has now reached the final stage is known.

A trial run was carried out yesterday and about 100 buses from Vandalur Zoo were sent to Kilambakkam bus terminus and exited via Urapakkam. It is worthy to note that govt and private buses from Chennai entered the bus terminus at Kilambakkam and came out from the back side and reached GST Road near Urapakkam. In the same way, a trial was conducted and buses from northern and southern districts reached the bus terminus by going under the flyover near Vandalur Zoo. The trial run would again be conducted on Friday and Saturday evenings.

It is now expected that the new bus terminus would be open to the public before the upcoming Pongal festival.
