Fantastic news - Road widening to ease the traffic congestion between Guindy and Tambaram!!

Posted on: 05/Jun/2023 9:10:11 AM
For decongesting the traffic from Guindy to Tambaram in Chennai, the state Highways dept has sanctioned Rs 15.7 crores for acquiring defense land to widen GST Road in Pallavaram.

It must be recalled that a few years back the TN govt constructed a flyover by spending Rs 82 cr at the intersection of the Santhai Road and Kundrathur Road on GST Road. The 1.5km long structure functions as a unidirectional flyover where vehicles could ply in just one direction namely Tambaram to Guindy.

Information is that the residents of Pallavaram and Chrompet have requested the traffic police dept to allow 2 way traffic on this flyover as it was big enough. It was explained by a resident from Kilkattalai that every evening many motorists especially suburban residents have been forced to use only the road below the flyover

He spoke about how just like in Adyar 2 wheelers and cars alone could be allowed to use the current flyover in the peak hours atleast. The state Highways dept has suggested widening of the current flyover for the 2 way traffic. The widening of the existing GST Road under the flyover has been recommended now.

The widening of the GST Road would not be easy as the defense land is abdutting the carriageway at the location and only when the land gets acquired then the present road could be widened into 3 lane carriageway with pedestrian footpath. It must be noted that there are also plans to install another traffic signal so that the vehicles going to and from Pammal and Kundrathur need not take a roundabout route.

As per some highway engineers, the pedestrian movt would be easy due to the traffic signal. This move has been appreciated by the residents but they want the flyover to remain functional for a full 24 hours.
