A target has been set to complete the link project between Velachery and Parangimalai (St. Thomas Mount) on the Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) in Chennai Metro City before July.

The Mass Rapid Transport System Project has been executed, and extensions are still being done to reduce the acute traffic congestion in Chennai Metro City and also enhance the existing transport facilities.

The first phase of the Mass Rapid Transport System was taken up jointly with Southern Railway to link Chennai Beach and Mylapore. The second phase of the project linked Mylapore with Velachery. 150 electric trains operate daily on this route.

Subsequently, in the third phase of this Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) Project, the link between Velachery and Parangimalai (St. Thomas Mount) commenced in 2008 for Rs. 495 Crores.

The total distance is 5 km, and the track was constructed up to a distance of 4.5 km by erecting 167 pillars on the route.

At this stage, due to problems encountered in acquiring land in the areas of Adambakkam and Thillai Ganga Nagar, the project remained shelved for several years.

The above land acquisition issue was resolved two years ago, and the construction of the project resumed. The task of erecting pillars and fixing the girders over the pillars is in progress.

Presently, the task of fixing the girders is underway. Out of the 500-meter distance, the task has been completed up to 250 meters, and 18 out of the total of 36 girders have been fixed.

A target has now been set to complete the remaining construction activities before July.

After this, approval for operation will be obtained from the Railway Safety Commission, and public service will commence.
