Revised auto fares announced by the TN Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa

Yesterday Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa announced the revised auto fare structure in Tamil Nadu.
The fare for the first 1.8 kilometres is Rs 25 and Rs 12 for every additional kilometre. The fares will come into effect from today. The government has also fixed Rs 3.50 as waiting charges for five minutes and Rs 42 for an hour. At night, between 11 pm and 5 am - the fare will be 50 per cent more than the daytime fare. The auto drivers can get the copies of the revised auto fares before 15 September from their respective Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) or at special camps to be organized by the RTOs.
The State government will spend Rs 80 Crore to install GPS-enabled meters in autorickshaws that come with digital printers so that the commuters know the exact fare and distance.
The meters will also be fixed with panic buttons that commuters can press if they feel they are in danger. The police control room will be notified and help will be provided.
The government has also issued a warning to drivers who do not follow meters. Those charging more than the prescribed fare will have their permits cancelled. Their vehicles can also be seized. Transport and police officials will keep a check on the autorickshaws.
