Chennai police conducted a special drive against wrong-way driving on Tuesday and Wednesday, booking 5,667 cases and collecting Rs 15.67 lakh in fines. The violators were asked to pay the fine on the spot to deter them from repeating the offense.
If the violators failed to pay the fine, their vehicles were detained, and as many as 1,845 vehicles were taken into custody. They will be released after payment of the fine amount.
The Chennai traffic police have booked 68,629 cases for wrong-way driving this year alone, collecting a total of Rs 1.53 crore in fines.
Meanwhile, the Tambaram city police commissionerate has released a press statement stating that the traffic police in their jurisdiction has collected a fine of Rs 2.11 crore after booking 53,872 cases for various traffic violations during January and February.
