Worsening of traffic congestion in Chennai by the kneeling buses? - MTC

The MTC or metropolitan transport corporation has revealed that the low floor kneeling buses would worsen the traffic congestion in Chennai. The differently able persons are happy about the low floor kneeling buses as they would be able to enter and exit the buses easily.
It must be noted that MTC had organised a trial run last week on various routes in the city. As per the directions of HC of Madras, the activists want the TN govt to solely purchase low floor buses in the city.
Many officers from MTC took part in the trial run of kneeling buses and they found that manoeuvring the buses on the sharp turns on narrow roads in the residential areas was very difficult. These buses were made and designed by Ashok Leyland company.
It was later confirmed by an officer of MTC that in certain places in Porur and Vadapalani etc the conductor got down to help the driver while reversing and turning etc. Truth is that this work by the conductor cannot be done o a daily baiss and it would lead to worsening of traffic congestion on the already busy roads.
The wheelchair users needed an additional 2 to 3fr to board or exit the buses and a few minutes to unfold the folding ramp at the entry. For this, the bus was parked in the middle of the road. This is also another concern regarding the kneeling buses. It was brought to light that MTC would have to spend double the normal amount in buying and maintaining the low floor buses.
