Construction of a new railway station between Vandalur Zoo and Kilambakkam in Chennai!!

The neighbouring villagers, tourists and college students now have requested for the construction of a new railway station between Vandalur Zoo and Kilambakkam new bus terminus in Chennai.

It is well known to us that Arignar Anna Zoological Park or otherwise known as Vandalur Zoo is present on 602 hectares of land in south Chennai. On an average, every day, more than 5000 visitors come and go. During the holidays and in the festival seasons, the number of visitors increases.

By electric train, most people come to Vandalur Zoo and they walk for about 1.5km from the railway station to the zoo. The auto drivers charge Rs 50 to Rs 100 from the railway station to the zoo. For many years, there has been a push to construct a new railway station near the zoo.

In the year 1992, a resolution was passed in the Vandalur panchayat. Now, even after 30 long years, the request was not fulfilled. The railway administration along with the then Kanchipuram dist administration decided to allott 1.35 acres of land and the project is still in the research stage only.

In Kilambakkam, a new bus terminus on 44.75 acres of land at a cost of Rs 393.74 crores (to operate both the govt as well as private buses from one place) is being constructed now. Now, there is no facility to reach this new bus terminus at Kilambakkam by train. Getting down at Vandalur or Urapakkam railway station is the only choice available now. In this scenario, a railway station would be constructed at Kelambakkam as announced by the TN govt.

Truth is that though this move has been welcomed by the public they also want the TN govt to consider a railway station to be near the Vandalur zoo. The villagers now want TN govt to construct a railway station in the middle of both Vandalur and Kilambakkam.
