The divisional manager of Southern Railways ,Madurai division, Mr.Padmanabhan Anand has mentioned that hereafter trains would not run on the old Pamban bridge in Rameswaram in TN. He added that the trains would only run on the new bridge.

Yesterday, he was busy addressing the reporters. He spoke about how the land for construction of the railway line from Rameswaram to Dhanushkodi was not acquired yet. It must be noted that a portion of land is still under the control of the department of forest only. Only after acquiring the land, the railways would be able to build rail tracks. He then explained that to set Koodal Nagar as the second railway station at Madurai, there were no basic infrastructural facilities for the passengers and for handling of goods etc.

It is well known to us that to connect Rameswaram with other parts, Pamban bridge was constructed in the middle of the sea and is more than 100 years old. Over the years, many natural disasters like storms etc have damaged this bridge. For the recent storm, a red alert was issued for this area. The bridge has been damaged to a huge extent in the storm.

The engineers from the railways inspected the bridge and announced it as unfit for the traffic and the traffic was stopped totally. The trains could run only on the upcoming new Pamban bridge. Research works have been going on now and the works (regarding the construction of the new bridge) would be completed June and in july 2023.

Those passengers interested in going to Rameshwaram by train would be able to go to Mandapam and from there they would be taken in a bus to Rameswaram using the same train ticket. In the same way, passengers would be taken in a bus from Rameswaram till Mandapam and arrangements have been made to take the passengers from Mandapam by train.
