To promote R&D on lab grown diamonds or LCD, Indian Institute of Technology in Madras or IIT-M has received a grant of Rs 242 crores from the union dept of commerce. Truth is that this was in line with the 2023-24 union budget recommendation. It is now said that IITM research would concentrate on driving indigenization of the LCD manufacturing process.  Various departments and research groups at IITM would be receiving grants.

It was revealed by the finance minister Nirmala Seetharaman that LGD is a  technology and innovation driven emerging sector with high employment potential. The surprising fact is that these diamonds have the same properties( optical and chemical) just similar to the natural diamonds.

She hinted in her budget speech that for indigenous production of LGD seeds and machines plus to reduce the import dependency, a research and development grant would be provided to one of the IITs in the next 5 years. It is superb to note that the custom duty on LGD seeds has been reduced now.

It is known that IITM has got a great history of undertaking translational research and with applications in the society and industry etc.

Director of IIT-M,Mr. Kamakoti explained that there is now a huge indigenously developing critical components , technologies etc to make India self sustainable in the LGD sector. When compared to the contemporary technologies like silica, silicon carbide and gallium nitride etc, diamonds have thermal and electrical properties that would make them much superior. Information is that the upcoming centre at IITM would recruit additional manpower for LGD research works.
